This classic wool jacket has more or less looked the same since the 19th century and the purpose of the coat has always been to protect the wearer in cold weather. The coat does more or less the same for you as wearing a thick wool blanket, but with sleeves and a hood. The reason why it's still around is that it has proven to be a superior garment to wear in harsh weather since it protects you from both wind and rain and allows you to wear plenty of insulating layers underneath. This version of the classic Duffle is made by Buzz Rickson's in Japan and the inspiration comes from the civil versions used in post world war two England. Companies started to make duffles for the civilian population using surplus fabrics from the army but re-shaped the style of the coat to give it a slightly more tailored fit.
Earliy versions of the jacket was used by fishermen and it is said that the toggles design was made to make it easy to button or unbutton the jacket while wearing gloves simply because it could be dangerous to remove ones gloves in extremely coldweather conditions. Wool was the fabric of choice for fishermen back in the days because it has the unique property to still keep you warm even when it is soaking wet. The Duffle coat was later adopted by the BritishRoyal Navy and was part of the uniform during WW2.The nameduffle is said tooriginfrom Antwerp in Belgium that first became known for making thesturdy twill wool fabric used in this kind of coats.
Buzz Rickson's has carefullyreproduced this garmentaccording to the original ones from themiddle of the last century and it is a pleasure to see that this kind ofhigh quality wool garment still can beproduced in modern times. The jacket willdefinitelykeep you warm even when the weather drops way below zero. Combine it with awoolsweater and you can enjoy the winter while lookingwelldressed at the same time!
